Weighted Grade Calculator

Weighted Grade = Σ (category grade × category weight / 100). Complete mode requires every category to have a grade and weights totaling 100% (tolerance 0.05 percentage points). Missing grades are not treated as zeros.

Convert a Percentage to a Letter Grade

Letter-grade cutoffs vary by school, instructor, and course. This calculator uses the selected scale and does not determine an official grade. An A does not always begin at 90%.

Grade Formulas Explained

Common Grade Calculation Mistakes

1. Averaging assignment percentages without considering point totals

A 90% on a 10-point assignment and a 70% on a 100-point assignment are not an 80% points-based course grade.

Incorrect: (90 + 70) / 2 = 80%.

Correct: (9 + 70) / (10 + 100) × 100 ≈ 71.82%. The 100-point task dominates the total.

2. Forgetting category weights

A 95% homework average does not count as 95% of the course if homework is only 20% of the syllabus.

Incorrect: treat every category average as equal.

Correct: multiply each category by its weight. Weighted calculator

3. Using weights that do not total 100%

If weights add to 80%, a “final” weighted number is incomplete.

Incorrect: silently scale 80% up to 100% without saying so.

Correct: adjust weights to 100% in complete mode, or use Mode B and call it a current estimate. Weighted calculator

4. Treating missing grades as zeros without justification

An ungraded exam is not automatically 0% unless the policy says missing work scores zero.

Incorrect: drop a blank category in as 0 × 30%.

Correct: leave it ungraded and use Mode B, or wait for the score. Weighted calculator

5. Confusing percentage points with relative percentage change

Moving from 80% to 84% is +4 percentage points, which is a 5% relative increase of the previous grade (4/80).

Incorrect: call a 4-point rise “4% more of the course.”

Correct: name the unit. What-if planner

6. Rounding before the final calculation

89.995% can display as 90.00% and still be a B if A begins at 90% unrounded.

Incorrect: round first, then pick a letter.

Correct: classify the exact value, then round only for display. Letter converter

7. Treating all GPA scales as identical

Some schools cap A at 4.0; others give A+ 4.3. Plus/minus steps differ.

Incorrect: assume this site’s table is your registrar’s table.

Correct: compare with the published campus scale. GPA calculator

8. Assuming a calculator result is an official school grade

Dropped scores, curves, rounding rules, and extra credit live in the syllabus, not here.

Incorrect: treat the ledger as a transcript.

Correct: use it to understand the arithmetic, then check the course policy. About
